RELIGIOUS POPULISM IN PAKISTAN: A CASE STUDY OF TAHREEK-E-LABBAIK PAKISTAN

This paper explores the drivers of religious populism in Pakistan. The first part study discusses emergence Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) based on a populist appeal that discursively constructs them ‘Pure People’ against ‘Corrupt Elite’. In second part, drawing upon Social Movement Theory (SMT), this explains how TLP attracts people into their fold by subjectively representing reality – unfolding politics and it securitizes Hurmat-e-Rasool (honor Prophet) Khatam-e-Nabuwwat (finality using certain frames for agitational politics. Furthermore, also analyses uses leadership cult woven around guardian Prophet’s honour to construct persuasive narrative Khatam-eNabuwwat political support base. Finally, concludes extreme politicization leads radicalization society
